Craft Idea for Recycling Catalogs and Junk Mail into Paper Stars
December 3, 2007 by thisrecycledlife

I’ve been working on this pattern and the directions for about a week now, it’s an idea for recycling your junk mail or catalogs into something pretty. I first saw these cool paper stars about 10 years ago on a trip to California with my sister. Now I see them everywhere and I think that it’s a good idea for a recycling craft.
I’ve been covering the floor with cut up pieces of junk mail as I got the pattern worked out. I thought that a lot of photos would really help as well, I know that I work better with a picture in addition to the text. Please let me know how it works out for you.

I’m into sewing, but not so crafty. Was just thinking of some alternate ways to do Christmas gifts this year and I saw your site! I love the look of your stars and I had a question for you:
Could these be made out of a tougher material then covered with fabric?
- This is a great question… Thinking your idea over, maybe instead of gluing the seams of the star points you could stitch them using your fabric over some cardboard? I think it might be quite a project for hand sewing but I’d be the results could be really fun. On the other hand perhaps a really deliberate blanket stitch would be fast and could work well with fabric… hey how about this idea - what about using those plastic cross stitch pages they sell at the craft stores as the tougher material? I’ve used it in the past to stiffen things like purses and it is light and provides a really good support for fabric. Let me know if you don’t know what I’m talking about I could probably get a picture.
OK, I always thought I was bright - now, not so much. After spending an hour trying to figure this out, I am sitting here with a pile of paper, and no idea how to do it. I understand that the c and d seams go together, but I am having a tough time with a and b…. duh.
Hey Jessica! - Video being added to YouTube as I write, I hope it’ll help! Don’t give up yet….
Very cool!
