I always ask permission before I post about someone and their work. Photos are copyrighted so if you want to use someone elses photo you should have permission. Most folks are more than happy to be written about and offer their ok freely.

is it generally acceptable to use someone else’s info if you give them credit and link back to them… should you ask before using any info, do you link or ask for permission at all?

yes, it’s acceptable to use a part of a post and link back to the blog; it’s considered more ethical to post part of a post than republish the whole article on your blog, since that’s what the link is for if your reader wants to read the whole article. you don’t have to ask, though you could if you want to.
